Skamlingsbanken - national rallying ground

Skamlingsbanken - The National Rallying Ground of South Jutland
At 113 metres above sea level Skamlingsbanken is the highest point of South Jutland.

Skamlingsbanken is a beatiful scenic area, from which there is a wonderful view of the entire region between Kolding and Christiansfeld. There is also a view across the Little Belt to Funen and to the west far into South Jutland.
Skamlingsbanken is especially known as the rallying ground for the danishness since the crisis about Schleswig-Holstein the the 18 hundreds. The national festivals, which were held from 1843-59, were in support of the Danish cause in South Jutland, where they wanted to support the fight for Danishness and the Danish language in the mixed Danish-German Schleswig. The largest meeting took place on 24 June 1945, where approximately 100,000 people celebrated the liberation of Denmark.

In 1863 a 16 metres high monumen was erected at Højskamlingen (the highest point) made of granite blocks in memory of the advocates of the Danish cause in Schleswig. The monument bears the names of the 18 men, who made a special effort for theDanish language or Danishness in South Jutland.
