The City Council of Kolding consists of 25 councillors, who have been elected for a four-year term. The principal leader of the municipality is Mr. Per Bødker Andersen (social-democrat), who has been the Mayor of Kolding since 1985.

During the current election term six political parties and a non-party list are represented in the top political organ of the municipality.
The political leg-work takes place in the political committees, yet the more comprehensive and more fundamental matters are decided at the council meetings.
In Kolding there are council meetings every second and fourth Monday of each month except July. Prior to council meetings there is Question Time, when citizens have the opportunity to get answers to questions, they have forwarded to the City Council in writing.
